Departments
For the concept of how departments scope delivery and AI evaluation, see Departments in concepts.
This page is the operational reference.
Where to manage them
Settings → Departments. The page shows every department in your workspace.
Adding a department
Click + Add department. Enter:
- Name — required
- Description — optional, helpful for trainers picking the right one
Save. The department is immediately available for user assignment and course association.
Renaming a department
Click the department row → Edit → change the name → Save.
Renaming preserves every association — users in this department stay in it, courses assigned to it keep their link. Only the label changes.
Deleting a department
Click the department → Delete. A type-to-confirm dialog appears showing:
- How many users are in this department (they’ll be unassigned)
- How many courses are linked (they’ll need a new department before they can be republished)
If both counts are non-zero, deleting will leave users without an assignment and courses without delivery. Move them first if you want a clean transition.
What you can’t do
- You can’t have zero departments. The onboarding wizard requires at least one; subsequent deletion of the last department is blocked.
- You can’t assign one user to multiple departments. Wisteria’s model is one-to-one. If you have a learner who genuinely belongs in two departments, pick the primary one and use manual assignment for cross-department courses.
The “Executive” department
The onboarding wizard prefills an “Executive” department because most organisations want a separate slot for leadership-tier training. You can rename it, delete it (once another department exists), or leave it as-is.
AI Training Profile per department
Each department has its own AI Training Profile layer that composes with the company baseline. The trainer for that department edits it at Settings → AI Training → [department tab]. See AI Training Profile.
Audit trail
Every department creation, rename, and deletion is recorded in the audit log with the department.* action prefix.
